Apple Music’s AutoMix Feature Makes Me Rethink My Spotify Subscription

After years of using Spotify, the writer contemplates switching to Apple Music following the recent introduction of the AutoMix feature. Apple Music’s DJ-style blending capabilities spark a re-evaluation of their music streaming preferences. While the writer appreciates Spotify’s social features, they are willing to try new options that could enhance their music listening experience, especially for hosting events.

For years, I have been a loyal fan of Spotify, enamored with beloved features like Daily Mixes, Discover Weekly, and Release Radar. These options present me with new tunes while still bringing back my classics; Spotify really knows my taste. However, I am starting to think it may finally be time to take a leap and try Apple Music instead.

During the recent WWDC 2025 keynote, Apple unveiled exciting new features for Apple Music. Among them were lyric translations and pronunciation aids, along with a rather uninspiring option to pin favorite albums or artists at the top of the library. Still, one particular feature has me intrigued: AutoMix.

The AutoMix feature creates seamless transitions between songs, akin to the work of a professional DJ. While Spotify offers a crossfade function as a basic audio transition, Apple Music takes it a step further by using Apple Intelligence for beat matching and time stretching—true DJ-style mixing.

While I find Spotify’s AI DJ truly impressive, as it always serves up tunes that fit my mood—even when I might not know exactly what I want—I also value the social aspect of the app. I enjoy seeing what my friends are listening to, as it often leads me to discover new favorites. Although I might have to give up some of these features, I feel that trying Apple Music could be worthwhile. Perhaps it’s time to shake things up a bit.

Now, when I host events—like my son’s birthday party or a family gathering—my guests will not only appreciate the playlist I curate, but they shall also enjoy the smooth musical transitions that keep the atmosphere lively. This could really elevate my hosting game!
